Natural Science
MUSIC BY CRISTOPHER FOX, WORDS BY IAN DUHIG, FILM – KRISTIJONAS DIRSĖ
"cracking concrete walls of an abandoned film theatre become the canvas for audiovisual exploration of Christopher Fox’s and Ian Duhig’s “Natural Science”. on one hand, it is a conceptual piece, where the only source of light is a projector stacked on the camera. this device both captures and projects the image. on the other hand, it is a sensual and intuitive reflection of music and poetry.
as the camera-projector scans the space, the performer emerges in it. the musician, along with the walls, floor, and ceiling, becomes part of the canvas too. the eery bunker-like concrete interior becomes a field of blooming flowers or a busy alley in the city, once the images of the camera-projector take over. contemporary artist Lora Kmieliauskaitė plays the violin and sings mesmerizing yet brilliantly simple poems by Ian Duhig. the words, the images, and the music merge into one expressive yet subtle musical film."

“nowadays, one of the main goals for a person in 21st century cultural field, remains uniqueness, the search for one’s original voice. reaching for a freedom of uniqueness and fear of being out of context are inseparable. desire to be unique and keeping pace with a progress at the same time becomes very contradictory; as a result, we are under constant anxiety and trying to find peace of mind to fulfill the needs of the market. it is often thought that an artist is only working on his art all the time. but if he or she wants to feel socially adequate in a cultural field it is a must to create a myth about himself or herself. a myth, the story of the artist himself, about his works, his education, his collaborations with famous collectives or institutions, and so on. at the same time, the creator has to be quite active in the process of forming both his creative work and his opinion as part of the cultural field.
„you can change to infinity, what an unlimited freedom ... so let’s look for our „i“, what a great entertainment – only on one condition – we will never find it. otherwise the entertainment would end“ — Sławomir Mrożek”

the violinist is positioned strategically at the center of the stage, with a large screen serving as the backdrop for a captivating virtual character crafted in her likeness through 3D rendering. Lora's music and movements influence the virtual character's actions to a certain degree, yielding a harmonious yet independent dynamic. by utilizing gyroscopic sensors and sound analysis software tailored for the composition, the performance becomes a captivating exploration of balancing these two dimensions, navigating moments of both compatibility and exclusion.”
